Succeeding Without Micromanaging
3-CD Audio Set (Over 3 hours)

Succeeding Without Micromanaging To all engineers and technical professionals!
"Succeeding Without Micromanaging" gives you the tools to work in a variety of environments WITHOUT BEING MICROMANAGED! This is all new material I developed over my 25 years as an aeronautical engineer, geophysicist, manager, and leader in Department of Defense contractors, aerospace, government, and commercial organizations. You won't hear old ideas already published. The tools on these CDs work because I developed them, I used them, and they worked for me.

Let me start at the beginning.
My name is Steven Cerri, and I have been an aeronautical engineer and geophysicist working in Department of Defense, governmental as well as commercial organizations. As a coach and mentor, I've also worked with hundreds of engineers... direct reports... helping them achieve better careers with more freedom. This experience tells me that you probably think one or more of the following things:

  • You like the idea of working on your own.

  • You like to run your own schedule as much as you can.

  • You like to "disappear" to get your work done whenever you can.

  • You believe that getting the answer is what is most important.

  • In fact, if you could do your work on the beach or in the mountains... so much the better. Who cares where you work as long as the work gets done.

  • You are paid for your mind, not for your presence, except on those rare occasions when your presence is absolutely necessary.

  • Your time is really your own.

  • Managers are a necessary evil. The real work gets done by you, and the other engineers and technical people.

  • You don't need to be watched or monitored closely, you'll get the job done!

  • The more interesting the engineering challenge, the better.

  • While you might think those things, you might have experienced managers who think something different. These managers think....

  • They have to keep you on a "short leash".

  • They have to know what you are doing and how "it's going" at all times.

  • They want weekly or more frequent "status reports".

  • They don't understand that the time you take to prepare for and give a status report or briefing is time taken away from the project.

  • They don't understand the details of your tasks enough to even ask the right questions let alone give guidance.

  • As a direct report who WANTS TO BE ABLE TO DO INTERESTING WORK WITHOUT BEING OVER-MANAGED you need to ask yourself the following five questions:

    1. How do I persuade my manager smoothly so I provide what is reasonable for my manager to know and yet doesn't choke my creativity and independence?

    2. How do I maintain my independence and expertise in an environment that wants to make me just a "cog in a big wheel"?

    3. How do I manage "up" instead of always being managed "to"?

    4. How do I get my manager to "trust me" to do my job?

    5. How do I get to pick the "most interesting" engineering problems to work on?

All these questions (and more) will be answered in “Succeeding Without Micromanaging”.

I've spent more than 25 years as an aeronautical engineer, a geophysicist, and a manager and leader in Department of Defense companies, government organizations, and commercial printer companies. During those years as an engineer and scientist I was never micromanaged. During those years I was studying and living these five questions I listed above, and coming up with real solutions that work with today's workforce. I now know what to teach you to keep from being micromanaged by most managers. (It's true, there are those few terrible managers who won't listen to anything except their own words. There's no way to structure a relationship with them that avoids micromanagement.) The tools you’ll hear in this CD work because I used them, I developed them, and they worked for me.

And in these CDs you'll get the answers to these questions and more. In fact, you'll learn specifics.
  • You'll learn how to talk to your manager so you can keep from being micromanaged.

  • You'll learn to understand your managers' mind-set regarding management and micromanagement and how to avoid being managed too closely.

  • You'll learn how to build trust with your manager.

  • You'll learn how to define micromanagement so that you and your manager can see eye-to-eye.

  • WHAT IS POSSIBLE for you with "Succeeding Without Micromanaging"?
Here is an example of the kind of results that are possible with this technology (true story with names changed). Bob is a very good engineer in a high-tech company. He is an expert in two engineering disciplines. He has been very successful for a long time in the company. But Bob has taken being independent to an art. He has never been micromanaged; he has made certain of that. To a large degree, he has been able to set his own schedule.

He has always felt that his contribution is his mind, not his presence. He worked from home when he wanted to. He arrived at work late and stayed late. He didn't attend meetings that didn't need his direct contribution. Lately Bob's manager has felt that Bob has been too independent and has been attempting to rein Bob in. His manager has been approaching Bob's "threshold" of micromanagement, to the point where Bob either has to change his behavior or he won't be working at this company in the future.

All this made Bob feel micromanaged. It made him feel that he was under the thumb of management.

So Bob asked me for some coaching. He wanted to know what to do because if things didn't get straightened out he was either going to leave the company voluntarily or the company was going to give him his "walking papers".

In the course of our coaching, I showed Bob how he could maintain his freedom and provide the communication and visibility management wanted. Rather than looking for a win-loose proposition, we found a win-win proposition.

By the time our coaching was complete, Bob was being praised by management AND most importantly to Bob, he actually felt he had MORE FREEDOM and AUTONOMY than he had before we began our coaching. Instead of feeling under the thumb of management he now feels more in control of his career, and management has what it needs to feel comfortable while Bob is free to be creative and inspired.

Wouldn't you like to be able to have the same freedom and results Bob achieved? This program will allow you to do just that. Here is what you receive.

    WHAT IS INCLUDED?
Here is what you receive in these 3 CDs:

In CD #1 you’ll learn what micromanagement REALLY IS. I’ve talked to hundreds of engineers over the years, and everyone’s got a different definition of micromanagement. If we are going to learn how to avoid it we’ve got to get clear on what it is. With examples and scenarios, this CD will establish a clear understanding of what micromanagement is and isn’t, from both the direct report's point of view, and the manager's point of view. This is important because you want to know what the manager is thinking about micromanagement as well.

In CD #2 you’ll learn how to actually avoid being micromanaged. You’ll learn what works and how to exactly implement this technology and how to know when it's working. You'll specifically learn dialogs and ways to talk to your manager so you can avoid the micromanagement that so many of us do not like. You'll also learn to think like a manager so you can get into the "manager's head" and understand their motivation as well.

In CD #3 you’ll learn from some real world case studies how to apply this technology. You learn what worked and why. You will learn how to "manage up" instead of always being "managed to". This is where the “rubber meets the road”!
